It's like a bridge that connects me

Hi Finny, how did you hear about our work?

I first heard about Rethink Mental Illness in 2012. I was studying for a Masters in Social Work and I came across the charity as part of my research. I signed up to the newsletter and came to know more about the work the charity was doing.

What made you apply to be a volunteer advocate?

My specialism is medical and psychiatric social work and I worked for a de-addiction (drug rehabilitation) centre in India for five years. After my Masters I applied for a job in Canada, but they needed someone with more experience.

When I came to England, I wanted to do some volunteering related to my field and gain good experience. Rethink Mental Illness had a volunteer advocate position available, so I applied for it.

How have you found it so far?

The experience has been good. I always wanted to be a part of Rethink Mental Illness. I think the work done by the charity to support people living with mental illness is amazing. In England there are many organisations that support, help and reach out to people. It’s a totally different picture in India where there’s more stigma and people can be considered almost untouchable.

What have you gained from the experience of volunteering?

It’s boosted my motivation. I’m a social worker so I love helping people. Volunteering with Rethink Mental Illness is like a bridge that connects me to people who need help. Volunteering is also good for my self-esteem as I believe the charity is doing a very good job.

What are your hopes for the future?

Ideally, I’d like to be an employee, working full-time. If an opportunity arises at Rethink Mental Illness I will apply. But for now, I’m volunteering and it’s good.
